LIFE & LEISUREREFINED MAGAZINE24Luciano Pavarotti once said, “One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.”A Glimpse into ElevenElevating the Franschhoek Dining SceneIn the heart of Franschhoek, a new culinary star beckons your undivided attention! I recently had the privilege of dining at the brand-new Eleven restaurant in this picturesque valley. This establishment takes its name from its address. It marks the realisation of a dream for globe-trotting chef-proprietor Ryan Shell and the talented team behind Ōku and Yama Asian Eatery, both well-known and highly-regarded restaurants in this charming locale. From the moment I stepped into Eleven, I felt I was in the right place. The ambience is warmly inviting, with a design that blends wood, raw brick, and burnt copper elements. Locally crafted furniture by Cape artisans add to the restaurant’s overall charm.International ExperienceI was eager to savour the culmination of Ryan’s culinary journey. This journey included extensive experience at premier eateries in the UK and various top-rated restaurants across Southern Africa. The pursuit of mastery often entails investing 10,000 hours of practice, they say. I had the privilege of savouring the creations of culinary masters who had devoted far more than their fair share of hours to their craft. It was an honour to witness such unwavering passion and skill on full display, all in the pursuit of delivering an extraordinary dining experience.Eleven presents an impressive menu line-up, featuring a tempting 11-course tasting menu, a set menu, an à la carte menu, and an inspiring selection of beverages to complement your choices. For my dining experience, I opted for the 4-course set menu, complemented by an exquisite beverage selection to elevate the evening. I was thoroughly delighted with every aspect of the experience. Each dish was not merely a visual delight but a delectable revelation. Along the way, delightful surprises arrived – special delicacies between courses that tantalised my taste buds. Every element on the plates was meticulously chosen, with flavours harmoniously complementing each other and novel tastes captivating my palate. My culinary journey commenced with the Smoked Springbok Tartare, accompanied by raisin and caper puree, crispy onion, and a quail egg. It was exquisite, prompting me to close my eyes to fully savour the moment momentarily. Following this was the highlight of the evening for me – the Oxtail Risotto with mascarpone, apple crackling, and lime oil. Creamy and brimming with flavour, I savoured each bite, attempting to prolong the experience. Just as I was lamenting the final taste of this culinary masterpiece, the Poached Seared Cape Bream graced our table, served with fennel, lentil, saffron, and vanilla parsnip. It was a fresh and impeccably prepared course that perfectly concluded my exceptional meal. To top it all off, the Whipped Panna Cotta, a work of art, provided a delightful and visually appealing dessert. I couldn’t resist devouring every last bite.Dining at Eleven did more than satisfy my hunger; it made me physically happier. As I left, I couldn’t help but smile, eagerly anticipating my return, where I could again devote my full attention to the pure pleasure of eating.Eleven garners five-star ratings in online reviews, which comes as no surprise given the stellar reputation of both Oku and Yama, both boasting 5/5 ratings on TripAdvisor.
